Top seed Miguel Luis Vicencio and second pick Rafael Liangco led the march of the quarterfinalists in the 10-under unisex category on Wednesday in the 33rd Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open presented by Cebuana Lhuillier and Metro Global Holdings at the PCA indoor shell clay courts in Paco, Manila.
Vicencio hurdled past James Rohan Cruz, 5-3, 5-3, while LIangco halted to late comeback of Jude Hidalgo en route to a 4-0, 5-3 victory.
Third rank Rupert Ohrelle Tortal and Macie Carlos also cruised into the quarterfinals after subduing Von Carlo Saraza (4-0, 4-0) and Rainier Angelo Selmar (4-1, 4-2), respectively, in the event backed by Dunlop, Fujidenzo/Whirlpool, Babolat, Hon. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, Head, Accel, Malate Bayview Mansion, Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils. Inc., Philippine Prudential Life Insurance Company Inc. and Seno Hardware.
Mindanao bets Minette April Bentillo and Prince Najeeb Langitao continued their assault as they advanced into the quarterfinals. While Bentillo got off easy with 4-0, 4-0 win over Marielle Alexi Jarata, Langitao took a more complex route against Samuel Reane Nuguit, 5-4 (6), 4-2.
Marc Andrei Jarata and Brent Signmond Cortes also forced their way into the next round. Jarata whipped Sherwin Rey Nuguit, 4-0, 5-3, and Cortes trounced Pete Andre Rodriguez, 5-4, 4-2,
In the boys’ 14-under, No. 1 Marcus Del Rosario and No. 2 pick Stephan Lhuillier fiercely barreled through the next round by disposing off their respective rivals.
Del Rosario booted out the resilient Jules Lazaro, 6-1, 6-4, while Lhuillier blanked Lance Matthew Sy, 6-0, 6-0, to secure their spots in the quarterfinals.
Del Rosario will face Joshua Austria, who had a harder time ousting Alexander Bulilan, 5-7, 7-5 (10-8). Lhuillier, on the other hand, arranged a match with Fhad Kennete Banico after a convincing 6-0, 6-3 victory over Andrian Encinares.
Fourth ranked Karl Christian Baran also barged into the quarterfinals as he zoomed past Nicholas Ian Balmes, 6-2, 6-1. Baran sets a meeting with Jose Maria Pague, who bounced back from pitiful first set to turn back Norman Gaspar, 2-6, 6-4 (10-6).
