SARIAYA, Quezon: A barangay chief in this town was arrested for illegal possession of firearm after police raided an illegal cockfight conducted in the village he served.
Renato Bascoguin, barangay chairperson of Barangay Tumbaga 1, was a arrested and yielded an unlicensed Armscor Cal. 45 pistol loaded with a magazine filled with seven bullets.
Police Supt. Joel de Mesa, Acting Chief of Police of Sariaya PNP led the raid which also busted an ongoing game of jueteng, an illegal numbers game.
The residents participating in the games fled when the police arrived.
The village chief of another barangay, Dioscoro Alcala, 53, and five others were also arrested by De Mesa’s team. Alcala is the barangay chairperson of Barangay Morong, also situated in the same town.
Besides Alcala and Bascoguin, police also arrested Pacencio Manalo, 47, jobless and resident of Sitio Taywanak, Barangay Castañas, Sariaya, Quezon; Jaime Rosales, 51 and resident of Sitio Flower, Barangay Tumbaga 1, Sariaya Quezon; Alvin Perez, 33, businessman and resident of Sitio Masay, Barangay Morong, Sariaya, Quezon; and George Landicho, 65, vegetables vendor and resident of Barangay Poblacion 3, Sariaya, Quezon.
Perez was caught in possession of a set of jueteng paraphernalia composed of a color game table, three colored dices and a belt bag containing gambling money amounting to P3,100.
The suspects were all detained in Sariaya PNP, while the police are readying a case for violation of RA 9287 and RA 10591 involving illegal gambling and illegal possession of firearms.
