Filipino master Nelson Villanueva topped the rapid event of the 2015 Thomson Cup chess tournament held in Singapore.
Villanueva collected 7.5 points on seven wins and one draw to claim the top honors in the nine-round event.
Filipinos Stewart Manaog and Franco Romeo Demiar completed the country’s domination by sharing the second place honors with seven points each.
Villanueva actually started slow as he succumbed to Singaporean Ethan Goh in the first round before regaining his composure and scored victories over Eric Laforteza of the Philippines (second round), Harsha Polavaram of Singapore (third round), Leo Buenaobra Jr. of the Philippines (fourth round), Lee Shi Hao of Singapore (fifth round), Olimpiu Urcan of Singapore (sixth round), Manaog (seventh round) and Tan Jun Hao of Singapore (eighth round).
Villanueva wrapped up his campaign with a draw with Demiar in the final round.
