• ‘Vinta’ bashes northern towns, spares Metro Manila

Metro Manila weather remained fair even as Typhoon Vinta whirled into Philippine territory and raised storm signal no. 3 in northern Luzon provinces, said Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather forecaster Jun Galang on Thursday.

Vinta’s eye is at east of Tuguegarao City.

Previous typhoons like Odette, Labuyo and Maring brought southwest monsoon with heavy to intense rains. Vinta is a strong storm but its rains came from the northeast monsoon which brings light rains, said Galang.

Vinta’s outer spiral also did not reach southwest Luzon where Metro Manila is located, he added.

Vinta threatens to extreme northern Luzon provinces, Galang said and added that it is likely to move west-northwest at 26 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 120kph and gustiness up to 150kph.

Meanwhile, storm signals were raised in most parts of Northern Luzon and Central Luzon. Storm signal no. 3 was raised in Cagayan including Calayan and Babuyan Group of Islands, Apayao and Ilocos Norte. Winds under signal no. 3 go from 101 to 185kph in 18 hours.

Signal no. 2—with wind velocity of 65 to 100kph in 24 hours—covered Batanes group of islands, Abra, Kalinga, Ilocos Sur, Mount Province and Isabela.

Signal no. 1—of 30 to 60kph winds in 24 hours—was raised in La Union, Benguet, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Aurora , Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac and Zambales.

Tuguegarao City, Olongapo City and Angeles City will remain cloudy with rainshowers or thunderstorms. Laoag City and Baguio City will have rains with gusty winds.

Metro Manila, Puerto Princesa City, Tagaytay City and Legazpi City will have partly cloudy skies with isolated rains or thunderstorms.

Metro Cebu, Iloilo City, Bacolod City and Tacloban City will also have partly cloudy skies with isolated rains together with Metro Davao, Cagayan de Oro City, and Zamboanga City.

Pagasa said Vinta will also bring moderate to heavy rainfall in the affected areas. Northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon will be dangerous for marine vessels.
