Visayas’ best dancers discovered

More than just a hip-hop competition, the recently concluded Dance Fest 2013, an event organized by GMA Network in partnership with SM Supermalls, was a showcase of unique talent and exceptional creativity of some of Visayas’ best dance troupes.

Out of the 42 groups from Iloilo, Bacolod and Cebu who joined in the dance contest, six crews were named grand winners—three each under the open and school categories.

“Velocity X” and “ODE of W.I.T.” emerged as champions in the Dance Fest 2013 Iloilo leg for the open and school categories respectively, after coming out to battle against second-placers “Ground Zero” and “K-Swag Generation”, and third-placers “C.N.C. Iloilo” and “Kinaadman Dance Crew.”

Meanwhile, “Critical Breakdown” and “Hili-ugyon Dance Company” danced their way to the top in the Bacolod leg of the competition. “Critical Breakdown” won against “Rockafellas” and “YC Rocks” for the open category, while “Hili-ugyon Dance Company” triumphed over “Choi Force Jr.” and “Kadayaw Dance Troupe” for the school category.

In Cebu, the best performer in the open category was “Type One” who came to battle versus “Kingz Gambit” and “New Friends.” Stealing the crown in the school category was “BC Dance Troupe” who emerged victorious against “UC D’Cypher Cru” and “Synergy Juniors.”

One of those who witnessed the contestants’ extreme and heart-pounding performances was GMA Network’s homegrown talent who is also dubbed “Bad boy ng dancefloor” Mark Herras. He served as one of the judges during the grand finals held in all areas.

“Sobrang nahirapan akong mag-judge dahil lahat ng contestants from Iloilo, Bacolod and Cebu ay talagang magagaling at buong-buo ang effort na ibinigay. At para bang habang tumatagal ‘yung performances nila, lalong gumaganda nang gumaganda. Natuwa talaga ako sa mga ipinakita ng contestants for this year’s battle,” he said.

Before Mark tallies each score, he makes sure that he gets to observe every group’s routine completely. “Bago ako mag-score, pinapatapos ko muna ‘yung routine ng grupong nagpe-perform. May mga times kasi na maganda ‘yung first half pero pagdating sa dulo, minsan lumalaylay, at hindi maiiwasan na minsan may nagkakamali. Para sa akin, malaking bagay ‘yun sa pagbibigay ng points. I think may right din naman ako to decide kasi dancer rin ako and alam ko ‘yung tama at mali sa ginagawa nila,” he added.

Also part of the judging panel in the Iloilo and Bacolod legs were Kapuso stars Ryza Cenon and Sef Cadayona. Anna Karenina’s Julian Trono was also present to entertain the crowd. In Cebu, Jang and Jeongwon of the K-Pop group sensation Down To Mars were assigned to evaluate and critic the contestants’ routines, while the other members Yheen, Kenji, and Daisuke performed for the audience members.
