ARITAO, Nueva Vizcaya: The Department of Agriculture (DA) has distributed some 3,200 cans of onion seeds as a subsidy to farmers in this town.
DA provincial Chief Celerina Miranda said the assistance to onion farmers is part of the agency’s High Value Commercial Crops Development Program (HVCDP).
“The program is designed to help onion farmers in this town recover from their loses brought by the previous calamities and disasters,” Miranda said.
She said the seed subsidy was given through the “Plant Now Pay Later” (PNPL) scheme in collaboration with the Federation of Aritao Farmers of Onion, Garlic, Ginger Growers Association (Afogga) since 2008 with 11 member-associations who are good borrowers.
Under the PNPL, farmers shall pay 50 percent of the seed subsidy or 3.5 lbs of the seven cans per hectare upon harvest.
Miranda said that the seed subsidy is cheaper than commercial seeds and farmers will only have to pay half of the provided seed subsidy.
