United Football League second division club JP Voltes FC moved closer to promotion after edging first division squad Team Socceroo FC, 3-1, in the first game of their playoff match up at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on Saturday.
JP Voltes, who ended their trip to the lower tier of the UFL at second place, now holds an early lead against the last placers of the first division on the aggregate score of their two-legged affair.
Consequently, Voltes took the upper hand upon the start of the first half as Tatsuya Nakamura was left unmarked inside the box to convert a Dominic Del Rosario corner to take the lead in the sixth minute.
The lead of the second division crew was doubled to 2-0 in the 26th minute as Mikko Mabanag received a timely pass from Del Rosario to tap the ball in from deep inside Socceroo territory.
On the other end, Team Socceroo retaliated with a goal for their side courtesy of UFL returnee Daniel Matsunaga off assist by Alexandre Reche in the 29th minute to cut the lead down just to a single marker.
Before halftime, a scramble inside the box of Team Socceroo ended in a goal conversion by Del Rosario as they inched away from their foes going into the break.
The two clubs engaged in a heated exchange of blows in the second half but no goals were blasted to the back of the net from the opposing sides.
Meanwhile, the second leg of the playoff meeting of the two squads will be held on 7:30pm of Tuesday, August 11, at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
