ANGELES City, Pampanga: Vice President Jejomar Binay described the Clark International Airport as underused, saying that building a new community is needed to solve the traffic problem in Metro Manila.

Binay, standard bearer of the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), recently took his campaign to the province, where he revealed plans to develop the international air terminal to maximize its use.

“Dito hindi masyadong magamit ang airport [Here the airport is not utilized much],” he said at the Angeles City Hall on Monday.

Tama na po ‘yan at maling pamamahala ‘yan [I said 10 percent only, when this has huge potential. I asked why. Why not grant your request? Because the name of your airport here is Diosdado Macapagal. Enough. I want my administration, as VP Honasan said, to be a healing and unifying administration],” he said. Honasan is his running mate, Sen. Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan.

Binay was referring to local officials’ request that 10 percent of air traffic be transferred to the Clark airport, which was renamed Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) during former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s time. Its name was later reverted to the original because foreign pilots found it difficult to pronounce the new name.

“Eh, gayong ito ay Clark underused. Sabagay itong administrasyon na ito, guilty of underuse and underspending. Andaming pagkakataong sayang na sayang ito [This Clark airport is underused. It is no wonder since this administration is guilty of underuse and underspending],” Binay said.

During his speech, he also said that he thought of building a new community in Clark.

In the times that I am asked especially on the traffic problem, I said we need to build new communities. And the new community that I think of building is here in Clark in Angeles],” he added.
