• VP’s wife asks Sandigan to let her travel

Vice President Jejomar Binay’s wife, Elenita, has asked the Sandiganbayan’s permission to travel to the United States next month.

In her motion dated May 12 and received May 13, Mrs. Binay said she would go to Honolulu, Hawaii for a vacation from June 5 to 24. She also sought to have her unwithdrawn travel bond amounting to P90,000 posted in separate payments in 2007 and 2009.

Mrs. Binay, a medical doctor, is facing graft charges over the alleged overprice of hospital beds at the Ospital ng Makati when she was the city’s mayor.

The case is tied to the alleged ghost purchase of 188 hospital beds, 10 intensive care unit beds and four orthopedic beds from UGM Medisys, found to be a non-existent entity, without public bidding.

The Vice President’s wife was cleared in 2011 but the Office of the Special Prosecutor revived the graft and malversation case early this year, prompting her husband to say that it was a smear campaign ahead of his expected 2016 presidential bid.
