Warriors tame Tigers, 68-67

PLAYMAKER Shej Roi Sumang nailed the game-winning lay-up to lead University of the East (UE) to a slim 68-67 win against University of Santo Tomas (UST) on Thursday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball Season 76 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Sumang, who scattered 20 points and dished out 10 assists with four rebounds, slipped past UST’s Karim Abdul to pull off the crucial lay-up with 11 seconds left remaining in the game. With the win, UE improved to 5-3 win-loss record.

Behind by nine points, 47-58, entering the fourth quarter, the Red Warriors outscored the Growling Tigers in the payoff frame, 21-9, via Sumang’s impressive performance. Sumang gave UE its first lead at 59-58 before UST regained the lead at 67-64.

But Sumang scored twice including the game-winning lay-up to reduce the Growling Tigers’ slate to 4-4. The Red Warriors avenged their 77-88 loss to the Growling Tigers in their first round encounter.

In the other match, reigning champion Ateneo De Manila University relied on the all-around play of skipper Kiefer Ravena to score a come-from-behind 67-59 victory over luckless University of the Philippines (UP) to start the second round with a 4-4 win-loss record.

Ravena posted 14 points and 14 rebounds with five assists and three steals, while Juami Tiongson and rookie Chris Newsome contributed 11 points each for the Blue Eagles.

The Fighting Maroons, who took a 33-22 lead in the second period remain winless in eight games. Joseph Marata led UP with 15 points.
