Bali Pure vented its ire on University of Santo Tomas (UST) with a 19-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18 come-from-behind win on Saturday to take the series opener of the Shakey’s V-League Season 13 Reinforced Conference battle-for-third series at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
American reinforcement Katherine Morrell was merciless as she fired 28 points on 25 attacks and three blocks to tow the Water Defenders to a 1-0 lead.
Middle blocker Amy Ahomiro contributed 11 points while Suzanne Roces added 10 markers.
Playmaker Kaylee Manns had 51 excellent sets.
EJ Laure had 19 attacks, three aces and a block for the Tigresses but failed to get enough support from the rest of the players as Cherry Ann Rondina was limited to just 10 points and Ria Meneses chipped in nine markers.
The Water Defenders were ahead in all scoring departments with 54-51 in attack line, 5-4 in blocking and 10-7 in service area while the Tigresses were leading in non-scoring skills, having 61-55 digs, 57-51 sets and 39-29 receptions.
But it was UST’s errors that spelled the difference, committing 25 mistakes against Bali Pure’s 15.
The Game 2 will be played on Monday at the same venue.
Meanwhile, Open Conference titlist Pocari Sweat and Bureau of Customs were playing in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series as of press time.
