Watson counts on Cup rookies for hot US start

GLENEAGLES, United Kingdom: US captain Tom Watson is counting on unbeaten newcomers Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed for a hot start on Sunday (Monday in Manila) that could spark an American fightback to win the Ryder Cup. Europe rolled to a 10-6 lead after Saturday’s foursomes and fourball matches, leaving the US squad having to match the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history to win on European soil for the first time since 1993. Europe rallied from 10-6 down in 2012 at Medinah to win 14 1/2 to 13 1/2 while the Americans overcame the same deficit to win by the same narrow margin in 1999 at Brookline.
