Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz ended the Philippines’ two decades of medal draught in the Olympics by winning a silver medal in the Rio Games early Monday.
Competing in the 53-kg division, Diaz notched 88 in snatch and 112 in clean and jerk, for a total of 200. Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Shu-Ching won the gold after scoring 212. South Korea’s Yoon Jin Hee finished third with 199.
It was Diaz’s third straight Olympics appearance.
The Philippines’ last Olympic silver medal came through pug Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco during the 1996 Atlanta Games. THE TIMES
