Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So scored two wins and a draw after three rounds of the prestigious 27th Summer Universiade chess competitions being held at the Kazan Sports Complex in Kazan Russia.
So, who will be seeing action in the 2013 World Chess Cup later this year, outclassed Nikita Meskovs of Latvia in the first round and Marian Jurcik of Slovakia in the second round then split the point with GM Jacek Tomczak of Poland in the third round.
With 2.5 points, So is in a 12-way tie for No. 3 behind GMs Vladimir Onischuk of Ukraine and Li Chao of China, who are sharing the lead with three points each.
Joining So in the group of 2.5-pointers are Tomczak, GMs Andrey Baryshpolets and Martyn Kravtsiv of Ukraine, Robert Hovhannisyan and Zaven Andriasian of Armenia, Ma Qun and Zhou Jianchao of China, Krzysztand Bulski and Wojciech Moranda of Poland, and International Masters Gaioz Nigalidze of Georgia and Maksat Atabayev of Turkmenistan.
In the fourth round, So will be meeting Baryshpolets, who also drew his third-round match with Moranda.
