Wesley notches third straight victory in Edmonton


Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So made a short work of his opponent to notch his third straight win in the 9th Edmonton Chess Festival in Edmonton, Canada on Monday (Tuesday in Manila).

So masterly handled his black pieces to force Canadian IM Raja Panjawani to resign in 23 moves of Reti Opening. The native of Bacoor City, Cavite province sacrificed his rook on h8 in the 11th move to gain a momentum and lodge an unrelenting attack to white’s King.

So now has three points, while Panjawani remains at the bottom with zero point in the 10-man single round robin International Tournament edition of the festival.

Joining So as co-leader is GM Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine who toppled FM-elect Alex Yam of Canada in 35 moves of English Symmetrical. Yam has 1 point.

Meanwhile, Canadian GM Anton Kovalyov beat his compatriot FM Dale Haessel in 23 moves of Dutch System. Ko–valyov now has 1.5 points, while Haessel remains at the bottom with no point.

American GM Samuel Shank–land gained one full point at the expense of Canadian FM Vladimir Pechenkin in 36 moves of French Tarrasch.
