Wesley to see action in 76th Dutch Tournament


Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So will start the season by competing in the 76th Dutch Tournament Tata Steel scheduled on January 10 to 26 in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

So, currently ranked No. 28 in the world, will be up against world-class oppositions including GM Levon Aronian of Armenia, GM Hikaru Nakamura of US, GM Fabiano Caruana of Italy, GM Boris Gelfand of Israel, GM Sergey Karjakin of Russia and GM Leinier Dominguez of Cuba.

Also invited are GM Arkadij Naiditsch of Germany, GM Anish Giri of the Netherlands, GM Pentala Harikrishna of India, GM Richard Rapport of Hungrary and GM Loek Van Wely of the Netherlands.

The Grandmasters of the A-group will be playing one round in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and another round in the High Tech Campus Eindhoven.

The 20-year-old So, a gold medalist in the 2013 Summer Universiade, is fresh from steering his team to a championship in the 2013 Pan American Inter-Collegiate Championship held in Lubbock, Texas. He is a sophomore student at Webster University.

Because of his successful stints in 2013, So will be receiving a major award in the Philippine Sportswriters Association Annual Awards Night on January 25 at the Solaire Resort and Casino in Pasay City.
