Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So ruled the 2nd Bunratty Classic Chess Tournament 2015 held at the Bunratty Castle Hotel and Spa in Ireland.

The 21-year-old So, who now represents the United States Chess Federation, collected five points on four wins and a couple of draws in the six-round tournament.

He outclassed untitled Van Der Swet Bart of the Netherlands (first round), International Master Rendie Thomas of England (second round), GM Pert Nicholas of England (fourth round) and GM Alexander Baburin of Ireland (fifth round) then drew with GM David Norwood of Androrra (third round) and GM Peter Wells of England (sixth round).

Nicholas, Wells, GM Short Nigel of England and GM Lalic Bogdan of Croatia were tied for second with 4.5 points each while Norwood and Baburin led the group of four-pointers.

“I want to thank everyone for watching my Bunratty event. The people here are friendly and remind me of Filipinos. They can still play pretty good chess even when completely drunk. Ireland is really very nice,” posted So in a chess website.

So now sets his sights on two big tournaments – the US National Chess Championships in March in Saint Louis, Missouri and the start-studded 2nd Vugar Gashimov Memorial Chess Tournament in April in Shamkir, Azerbaijan.

Recently, he placed fourth overall in the 2015 Tata Steel Chess Tournament held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

Wesley should explore the possibility of employing several of the Filipino GMs to assist him in his quest for the Worlds. Eugene Torre should be available.
