DAVAO DEL NORTE: Western Visayas Region bagged three gold medals in athletics at the start of the 58th Palarong Pambansa on Sunday at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex (DNSTC) here in Tagum City.
Matt Atanas registered 10.70 meters in the shot put boys’ elementary division for Western Visayas’ first gold. He defeated silver medalist Lord Hanz Floyd Gaila of Cagayan Valley (10.41m) and bronze winner Jerick Mendoza of Southern Tagalog (10.29m).
Western Visayas copped two more golds in the secondary high school boys’ division courtesy of John Christian Capasao (discuss throw) and Jose Jerry Belibestre (long jump).
Capasao posted 40.60 meters, beating John Edric Manalang of National Capital Region (NCR) (38.77m) and Gideon Arellano of Southern Tagalog (38.42m).
For his part, Belibestre scored 7.15 meters to outshine Central Luzon’s Martin Esteban (6.96m) and teammate Cesar Fernandez (6.75m).
Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario will lead opening ceremonies on Monday at 3 p.m. along with Eric Buhain (swimming) and Elma Muros Posadas (athletics) as well as football star Yannick Tuason
Joining del Rosario in the program are Department of Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro and Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali.
Arnis, baseball, gymnastics, sepak takraw, softball, volleyball and futsal will also start on Monday.
In other games, host Davao Region nipped Northern Mindanao, 75-74, in the secondary boys’ basketball while NCR won over Bicol Region, 88-51, in the secondary girls’ class. NCR stopped Region IV-A, 64-62, in the elementary boys division.
In volleyball, NCR outlasted Cagayan Valley, 25-16, 25-16, while Central Visayas edged Caraga, 25-22, 25-12, in the secondary boys, and NCR disposed of Caraga, 25-20, 25-14, in the secondary girls.
NCR outplayed Zamboanga, 5-1, in secondary baseball while Central Visayas won over Bicol Region, 4-0, and Northern Mindanao whipped Mimaropa, 6-1.
