ILOILO CITY: Western Visayas has a share of 3,407 wheelchairs for persons with disabilities from the Department of Health. Secretary Janette Garin turned over the wheelchairs on May 3 that signals the start of massive wheelchair distribution nationwide. The DOH procured a total of 85,311 wheelchairs to equip primary care facilities nationwide. A total of 68,249 units are allocated to the regional health offices where 15,586 will be given to rural health units and barangay health stations for patient’s short term use and 20,044 units for patient transport within the facilities. Some 23,379 units will be received by the DOH regional offices for patients use through other sources and 9,240 units for persons with disabilities needing long term use. In Western Visayas, wheelchair distribution is 418 for the province of Aklan, 448 for Antique, 703 for Capiz, 169 in Guimaras, 1,388 in the province of Iloilo, and 281 for Iloilo City.
