The founder of Wilcon Depot Inc. has joined the ranks of Henry Sy, Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Jorge Araneta, John Gokongwei Jr., among others, as the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) awarded William Belo its President’s Award for this year.
Belo, the founder and chairman emeritus of Wilcon, was officially included on the list of pillars and important contributors to the growth of Philippine retailing during the gala night held on July 26 for the 20th Outstanding Filipino Retailers and Shopping Centers of the Year ((OFR – SCY) Awards, the country’s “Oscars of the Philippine retailing” at the Grand Ballroom of Solaire Resort and Casino in Paranaque City.
Previous recipients of the President’s Award included Sy (Father of Philippine Retailing), Zobel de Ayala (Pillar of Philippine Retail Development), Araneta (Pioneer of Philippine Retail Entertainment), Socorro Ramos (Matriarch of Philippine Retailing), Gokongwei (Champion of Retail Entrepreneurship), Ambassador Bienvenido Tantoco Sr. (Father of Luxury Retailing), Mariano Que (Father of Health and Wellness Retailing), Samie Lim (Pioneering Pillar of Franchising), Teresita Sy-Coson (Philippine Retailing’s Woman Visionary Leader), Andrew Tan (Pillar of Mixed-Use Developments), and Lucio Co (Patron of Micro-retail Entrepreneurship).
“Mr. William Belo’s commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction are the primary reasons why Wilcon Depot is continually growing and being patronized by its customers and partners for the last 40 years. The innovations he has introduced through the company have set the standards not only in the home furnishing and construction niche, but in the entire retail industry as well. His invaluable contribution to the Philippine retail industry truly deserves PRA’s highest recognition,” PRA president Paul Santos, president of Picture City, emphasized.
The PRA Board unanimously decided to bestow Belo the title “Patriarch of Home Building Retail” for the 12th President’s Award, the highlight of the event.
As a local company with international standards, Wilcon Depot has proven that home-grown companies can be truly world-class, Santos added.
Belo received the PRA President’s Award, the highest award given by PRA in cooperation with the Department of Trade and Industry – in recognition of his insightful and commendable leadership at the helm of Wilcon Depot thus making it the country’s largest and most successful in home building retail.
Also recognized during the PRA event are this year’s winners in the following categories: Full–Line Department Store/ Hypermart, Food Retailer, Fashion, Services, Home Improvement Center, Most Promising Retailer, Regional Retailer, Specialty Retailer, Foreign Brand Retailers, Shopping Centers of the Year and Regional Shopping Center of the Year.
Evelyn Balmeo-Salire, PRA secretary-general, said the annual awards serve as PRA’s way of inspiring industry players to recalibrate their operations to be globally competitive.
“Retailers have become more aware of the stringent criteria for evaluating and judging the candidates and they know that when a company is awarded, they are truly world-class. This is why in the many years that we have been presenting the awards, the number of nominees, including self-nominations, has consistently increased,” Salire stressed.
