World’s No. 1 Serena Williams led the Philippine Mavericks’ lopsided 29-18 win over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday in the opening day of the Manila leg of Coca-Cola International Premier Tennis League 2015 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Despite losing her mixed doubles match together with Filipino-American Treat Conrad Huey, the 34-year-old American professional tennis star bounced back in the women’s singles by beating Serbian Ana Ivanovic, 6-3.
“Great! I love the crowd here, they are excited and it is really feel good to be back here,” said Williams, who is the reigning French Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon champion. “Treat (Huey) and I really played well together and we were close out to winning but we couldn’t pull it out.”
Philippine Mavericks’ legend player Mark Philippoussis won over UAE’s Goran Ivanisevic, 6-2, in the men’s legend singles first match.
Milos Raonic defeated Tomas Berdych, 6-4, in the men’s singles match that gave the Mavericks two wins in a row before Huey and Williams lost to David Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic, 6-5 (6), in the mixed doubles third match.
Richard Casquet and Edouard Roger-Vasselin delivered the coup de grace by whipping Berdych and Nestor in the last men’s doubles match, 6-3, to send the Philippine Mavericks to day one victory.
