PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino 3rd on Monday said it is better for Sen. Grace Poe to forego her presidential ambition and be the candidate of the Liberal Party (LP) for Vice President as this would enhance her knowledge in running the affairs of the state.
The President was on his third visit to Cebu this year where he inspected two newly-completed infrastructure projects in Cebu–the Mactan Circumferential Road in Lapu-Lapu City and the Sergio Osmena Jr. Boulevard in Cebu City–before addressing a gathering of local officials from Cebu, Negros Oriental, Bohol, Siquijor, Leyte and Samar.
Speaking in what Malacañang has been labeling as “a gathering of friends,” Aquino said Poe–the pre-election survey frontrunner–could be a more formidable presidential timber in 2022. The President did not mention the senator’s name in his speech but it is widely understood that he was referring to Poe, who was also in Cebu City on Monday.
“Kung makakasama natin ang taong ito ay mahahasa at mabibigyan ng bagong lalim ang kanyang karanasan at ang kanyang mabuting intensyon ay talaga naman pong mapapagyaman pa ng sapat na kasanayan sa pamamahala. Lalo pa pong lalakas ang aking pag-asa na sa 2022 ay maipagpapatuloy ang tuwid na daan [If this person will be with us, her experience in leadership will be further honed and given a new depth and it would further reinforce my hope that our straight path direction would continue beyond 2022],” he added.
The President has reportedly been pursuing Poe to become the running mate of Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas 2nd but the senator kept on playing coy about her political plans for 2016.
Poe was in Cebu to grace the opening of the intramurals of the University of San Carlos.
Organizers of the event, however, barred the media from covering the event.
When asked by reporters at the university’s gates, Poe said she was not aware that Aquino and his party as well as Vice President Jejomar Binay were also in town.
Aquino on Monday led the administration’s show of force in the Queen City of the South.
At the Cebu Coliseum in the old Colon district, he made a pitch for Roxas.
“Kung daang matuwid ang nagdala sa atin ng transpormasyon, dapat sa daang matuwid tayo ay manatili [If the straight path brought us transformation, then this straight path should continue],” the President said.
