CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: A woman died in a fire here early Sunday morning, investigators said.
Nelly Zapanta’s charred body was recovered five hours after the fire of still unknown origin razed a bakery at J. R. Borja Extension here past 3 a.m.
Fire investigator Dennis Gales said that Zapanta’s body was found under the bakery table during a search when family members confirmed that she was left in the house.
Bienvenido Macaraeg, who rented the duplex house, said that the fire started in the house ceiling.
Macaraeg owns “Nature’s Bakery” that supplies bread products to some malls in the city.
Nathaniel, the son, told fire investigators that he grabbed his mother out of the room to safety just as the fire spread around.
“I have no idea if Nelly was able to save herself, although witnesses narrated that she had already come out of the house, but came back later,” he said.
Fire investigators said that they were still determining the total damage.
The bakery, the duplex house and three vehicles were burned in the fire.
Macaraeg said he has no insurance and his vehicles were on mortgage.
