WHILE aboard a coach of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 2, a woman gave birth on Thursday morning.
According to Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) Spokesman Hernando Cabrera, the woman went into labor at about 8:50 a.m. as the train was heading for C.M. Recto Avenue in Manila.
He said the woman gave birth to a baby girl while aboard the moving train.
She was brought to the Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila adding that both the still unidentified woman and the baby were safe.
Cabrera said LRT doctors and a passenger promptly assisted the woman when the train reached Recto station.
“Pagdating sa Recto sinalubong siya ng doktor at dinala sa [When the train arrived at Recto station she was assisted by our doctors and was brought to the] Fabella Memorial Hospital,” he said.
At the same time, Cabrera clarified rumors that children born on LRT trains were given lifetime free passes.
Although the LRTA discourages the practice of giving birth in its coaches, it could not prevent it from happening.
Prior to the incident, a passenger gave birth inside a coach, heading northbound, while the train was approaching Doroteo Jose station of LRT-1 coach last May 22.
Based on LRTA records, as of October 2012, at least 14 babies have been born aboard the LRT-1.RITCHIE A. HORARIO
