This is not intended to mimic the recognition extended to seafarers a week after the celebration of the Day of the Seafarer that had as its theme “Seafarers Matter”. Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL) can only claim 10 years of existence. Yes, WIMAPHIL will celebrate its 10th anniversary on July 7 that will be marked by a whole day affair on said date. The morning program will take place at the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS) located in Roxas Boulevard commencing with a thanksgiving mass at 9 o’clock.

Various activities highlighting maritime-related events such as a seminar on the WOW Safety Tips for passengers on ships plying domestic routes will be held after the mass. WOW stands for WIMA on Watch and the project is a collaborative initiative of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and WIMAPHIL. The seminar is the second of two events under the WOW initiative, the first being the putting up of WOW safety tips posters at passenger terminals and aboard ships.

The Maritime Museum, hosted at the AIMS, will be open during the morning program to allow participants to visit and learn a bit of the country’s maritime history. This activity should be made a regular activity to be offered to maritime students and the public as a way of enhancing awareness of the maritime circumstance of the Philippines.

Two of the flagship programmes of WIMAPHIL, i.e. the “She to Sea” campaign and environment protection will be highlighted in the evening event to be held at the Magsaysay Convention Hall, Roxas Boulevard. Expected to grace the occasion are government and industry leaders with whom will be shared the association’s accomplishments in the past 10 years. Most important though will be the presence of the women in maritime who will come together to celebrate the ten years of active and selfless participation in implementing the programmes of the association. They are who are to be feted and congratulated on July 7 for showcasing how volunteerism can do much to make that statement: WOMEN IN MARITIME also MATTER!!

More power WIMAPHIL!
