Women leaders from different sectors gathered on Thursday to launch the 3rd One Billion Rising global event to fight violence against women. Comprised of the Gabriela Alliance of Filipino Women, Gabriela Women’s Party and Monique Wilson’s New Voice Company, the event, dubbed One Billion Rising Revolution Philippines will be held at the Bonifacio Shrine in Manila on February 14 at 8 a.m.
“Women all over the world and women in the Philippines continue to rise as government neo-liberal policies spawn further violence against the people’s economic welfare and exacerbate anti-women laws and policies,” said GWP Rep. Emmi de Jesus.
Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan for her part said the rising of Filipino women is very timely. She said, “This time, women are also rising to voice out our demands fro truth, justice and accountability [for the Mamasapano incident]. The women, children and their families whom we’ve had dialogues with continue to suffer.”
Finally, Wilson, who initiated the One Billion Rising advocacy in the Philippines rallied, “February 14 will be the day we drum, dance and rise all over the country to kick off our campaign to end violence poverty and impunity towards the global commemoration of International Women’s Day on March 8.”
