DAGUPAN CITY: Three-time world champion and 2013 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Jessie Aligaga will train Dagupan athletes in wushu in preparation for the 2017 Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) meet and the Palarong Pambansa.
This was bared by Commissioner Finnela Sim of the Dagupan City Sports Commission (DCSC) after welcoming Aligaga, who is today’s most popular athlete in wushu, in Dagupan on Wednesday, along with Philippine Olympic Committee Treasurer Julian Camacho and Wushu Federation Vice President Samson Co.
“They were here upon our invitation to help us in the training of our athletes in wushu which we are going to have it for the first time,” said Sim.
The city of Dagupan never had a team in wushu as well as in archery in the R1AA meet.
The Dagupan City Athletic Association announced that beginning next year; Dagupan will be competing in wushu and archery.
Despite its lack of archery and wushu players, Dagupan went on to become the first runner up in this year’s R1AA meet held in San Carlos City, trailing grand champion Pangasinan 2.
“We are happy to be here in Dagupan for the training of the city’s wushu team. We brought with us one of the best coaches in wushu who will prepare the program for Dagupan so we could send our best athletes not just in the R1AA but also in the Palarong Pambansa. We should have a good result under the program,” said Wushu Federation of the Philippines Vice President Co.
Sim said that by November, the DCSC will meet with all the school principals in the city, both public and private, to scout for interested athletes aged 12 years and below.
“The athletes who will pass the try-out will undergo rigid training,” said Sim.
Wushu literally means martial arts entail physical and self-discipline. Among the most popular martial arts actors known for the sport is Jet Li.
Wushu competition is divided into two disciplines— the taolu and sanda. Taolu is form demonstration while sanda is full-contact sparring that includes punches, kicks and throws. The athletes will train in both disciplines according to their choice.
