Western Visayas lost some P12.2-billion loss in infrastructure and properties because of natural calamities from 2008 to 2012, the Office of the Civil Defense in the region said. Civil Defense Regional Director Rosario Cabrera said that the losses are mainly because of damages by super typhoons and floods that devastated some areas and also caused heavy damages to crops, properties and even took lives in the region. The losses in five years cover P7.4 billion in infrastructures and P4.8 billion in agriculture and properties. During the three-day Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council Summit held recently, Cabrera highlighted the urgent need to strengthen the local government’s disaster risk reduction management to develop the region’s prevention, preparedness and response to untoward disasters.
