SOLDIERS, policemen, church leaders, officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and local candidates in the Western Visayas region have concluded the unity walk for peace and covenant signing for Secure and Fair Elections (SAFE) 2016.

The peace initiative was started in Aklan on February 26 and followed in the provinces of Capiz, Guimaras, Antique and Iloilo in February 27, February 29, March 1 and March 12 respectively. Candidates for local elections, Comelec officials, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) through the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV), different religious groups, the media and the civil society organizations in the different provinces of Panay Island came together to unite and foster commitment to refrain from violence and work for peace for SAFE 2016. “Working together in the spirit of ‘Bayanihan’ is the key to achieve our common goal of secure and fair elections. We have to work collectively and continue to collaborate in cultivating culture of peace in our communities,” said Brig. Gen. Harold Cabreros, Third Infantry Division commander.
