A year-round fare discount for students has been proposed in the House of Representatives.
Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas made the proposal in his House Bill 850 which gives a 20-percent discount on land, water and air fares to students even on Saturdays, Sundays, Christmas vacations and other holidays during the school year.
To get the discount, students must present an ID or enrolment form, or other documents to properly establish their identity and student status.
The year-round discount will ease the financial burden of parents and guardians,” Vargas pointed out.
Further, Vargas sees the fare discount as an opportunity for students to engage in academic, extra-curricular and civic activities during non-school days, and would also be of aid to those students undergoing internships, training and other activities covered by their curricula.
Vargas’ measure provides that the student fare discounts would only be authorized only through a circular of the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board.
The Department of Transportation and Communications will be direct its attached agencies or offices to draw up the implementing rules and regulations of the bill.
