A MILITANT youth group on Saturday demanded that President Benigno Aquino 3rd resign for reneging on his promise to distribute the 6,453-hectare Hacienda Luisita to farmer workers in defiance of a Supreme Court ruling in 2012.
Anakbayan made the call as the nation marked the 10th anniversary of the “Hacienda Luisita massacre” in which soldiers opened fire on striking farmworkers, killing seven of them.
“The injustice in Luisita continues until today. The haciendero Aquino government is resorting to devious schemes to keep the land despite the ruling of the Supreme Court ordering its distribution,” Vencer Crisostomo, Akbayan national chairperson, said in a statement.
The group claimed that Virgina Torres, the former chief of the Land Transportation Office’s (LTO), is now involved in schemes to retake “distributed” lots in Luisita. Torres is a known family friend of the Cojuangco-Aquinos.
As much as P471 million were reportedly given to the Cojuangco-Aquinos through the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) for “landlord compensation” despite their continuing control of Luisita.
“Aquino should resign or be removed from power. He is obviously using his power for his and his own landlord family’s gain. He is a criminal and his hands are covered with the blood of the farmers killed for fighting for their rights,” Crisostomo said.
