• ‘Zipper lane’ opened on EDSA

To reduce traffic buildup during the Christmas season, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday opened a “zipper lane” which allows vehicles to counterflow on a stretch of EDSA.

The zipper lane starts from the northbound inner lane from SM Megamall to Pioneer St.

It will be opened from 8 to 10 a.m. until December 23, except weekends.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino hopes the zipper lane will ease traffic congestion from Ortigas Ave. going to Makati City in the morning.

Upon reaching EDSA-SM Megamall, vehicles will enter the northbound lane and will counterflow until they reach the zipper lane exit at Pioneer.

Based on MMDA figures, at least 1,200 vehicles pass along a lane of EDSA every hour.

On Friday, the MMDA will open the zipper lane from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
