It was not entirely hard to understand why Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles grossed a whopping P10.8 million on its opening on October 17, beating Hollywood hits that opened in the same week. Families came in droves to see the ground breaking horror adventure flick that does not only celebrate the Filipino filmmakers and workers’ ingenuity, creativity and artistry, but also its unabashed leaning towards all-Filipino folklore.
And any child who grew up watching movies would certainly have fond memories of scare flicks that made them shriek in wild abandon and lose sleep afterwards.
Basically structured as a siege film and shot entirely on green screen, Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles makes more mature viewers recall their first encounters with an aswang on the big screen, and gives kids the chance to experience what their parents have enjoyed before and still do now.
Even the actors in the movie have not been spared from having their own share of “aswang memories.” Tiktik’s aswang-buster Dingdong Dantes as the reckless Makoy says that he has never seen an aswang in his life. “Thank God that I did this movie because now I know what works against them and what does not, just in case I would encounter one.” In the movie, he fought an army of aswangs out to get his and his girlfriend Lovi Poe’s firstborn.
Truly, Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles is the local cinema equivalent of a scare movie that makes you laugh with delight as you scream out of genuine terror. It gives the children the creeps that they will take pride in re-telling several years hence.
A co-production venture of Reality Entertainment, Agostodos Pictures, Reality Entertainment’s sister companies and post-production arms PostManila and Mothership, and GMA Films, Tiktik: The Aswang Chroniclescontinues to pack audiences in, especially the children. Kids should go see it with the whole family.
