Azkals set sights on Suzuki Cup semifinals

THE Philippine Azkals earned a return trip to the semifinals of Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup following an impressive 2-0 win against Myanmar on Friday at the Suphachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.


Striker Phil Younghusband delivered the first goal of the team in the 46-minute mark while Angel Guirado notched the second goal in the injury time as the Azkals wrapped up the group stage with two wins and one loss.

The Azkals, mentored by German head coach Hans Michael Weiss, tallied six points on 2-1-0 win-loss-draw slate to claim the No. 2 seeding in Group A. Host Thailand topped the group with a perfect nine-point output on three wins.

The Philippines lost to Thailand in the opening game, 1-2, but came back strong in the next match by nipping 2008 champion Vietnam.

Veteran Eduard Sacapaño, the No. 3 goalkeeper of the Philippines behind Filipino-British Neil Etheridge and Filipino-German Roland Muller, also proved his worth as he denied several attempts of Myanmar.

The Philippines will face the first-place finisher in Group B composed of dfending champion Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Laos.

Indonesia and Malaysia and Singapore and Laos were playing as of press time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The first leg of the home-and-away semifinals is scheduled on December 8 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, while the second leg is slated on December 12.
