DepEd officials visit typhoon-hit areas

Some officials of the Department of Education (DepEd) will visit today areas heavily ravaged by typhoon Pablo [international codename: Bopha], particularly in the provinces of Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental to ensure that classes re-open in most of these areas.

DepEd said that the resumption of classes brings back hope and normalcy to students and children in disaster-afflicted areas.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro will personally visit the municipalities of Cateel, Boston and Baganga in Davao Oriental province.

Students and children, according to DepEd, are the most vulnerable of the affected people and they are the ones that need hope the most.

The DepEd said that students in some 445 public elementary and secondary schools in those areas may have to attend classes in tents for some time while authorities are constructing more permanent classrooms.

Data from the department showed that at least 877 classrooms were destroyed or washed out by the rampaging floodwaters and strong winds brought by typhoon Pablo.
