One dead, four hurt in shooting spree

A 50-year-old male was shot dead and four others were seriously injured in a shooting spree at a funeral wake on Friday in Baseco Compound, Manila.

Police identified the fatality as Froiland Magallanes, 50, construction worker, of Block 1, Aplaya, Baseco Compound. The other casualties were Rosario Rosin, 38; Dolores Socon, 64; and couple Leonora Briones, 45 and Nobelito Briones, 45, all of the same compound.

In a sworn statement by Teresita Villanueva, 47, Magallanes’ live-in partner, the victims were playing cards (tong-its) at about 2 a.m. at her son’s wake. The unidentified gunman appeared from the dimly lit portion of the area and fired successive shots at the victims, hitting Magallanes at the back of his body and right forearm that caused his immediate death. The gunman fled.

Three empty .45-caliber pistol shells were retrieved at the crime scene by the responding team of Scene of the Crime Operatives.
