Surveys have shown that Filipinos are always hopeful as they prepare to meet the New Year. This optimism comes despite the fact that majority of Filipinos are poor, have no savings and underemployed.
But this is not surprising. The Philippines had been rated as one of the happiest countries in the world, and just recently, the UK-based Charities Aid Foundation ranked the country as the 17th most generous in the world. That says a lot for a nation whose citizens are exposed to hardships every day.
Perhaps this spirit of giving and cheerfulness comes from the tenacity of spirit Filipinos are known for. Filipinos will find a reason to smile in the midst of economic asperity. They will laugh in the face of a calamity, and chuckle at the bitter bargain life has dealt them.
Even the very young have shown this remarkable character. You can see this attribute in elementary and High School students in our province. These students won’t think twice in lending a hand when they see a person in need. They will clean a neighbor’s yard, gather kindling for the elderly, and are ever ready to respond to the community’s call for help especially after a calamity.
Schools should continue to cultivate this spirit in campuses. Having a strong character is as important as excelling in academics. Molding students’ moral, psychological and social fiber is vital in building a strong, resilient and happy community.
