NOW here’s happy news about orphans of our soldier-heroes: the existence of the HERO Foundation. More than a thousand dependents of fallen military men will benefit from a
donation of P2 million a year to this foundation. HERO is the acronym of Help Educate and Rear Orphans Foundation. The program was formed last April 9 (Araw ng Kagitingan or Day of Valor).
The donation is from Asia Brewery Inc.
It is a joint undertaking of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the private sector. In their memorandum of agreement, the ABI pledges to support the HERO foundation in financing student scholars endorsed by the AFP Educational Benefits System Office (AFPEBSO).
Working with the AFPEBSO, the HERO Foundation Inc. has been providing financial assistance in the form of allowances to qualified dependents of AFP members.
The foundation’s main goal is to secure educational support for children of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice of dying or being permanently incapacitated in the line of their duty as defenders of the Republic and its sovereignty.
The top officers if HERO are an impressive lot. They are Fernando Zobel de Ayala, chairman, and Antonio T. Aquino, president. Michael G. Tan, COO of ABI and Mr. Hubert L. Tan, ABI vice President for marketing, are among the directors.
