Blue Eagles soar in 2012

Ateneo de Manila University continued its winning tradition in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines by claiming its fifth straight title in the men’s basketball tournament of the Season 75.

Ateneo swept University of Santo Tomas (UST), 2-0, in their best-of-three championship showdown. The Blue Eagles took the Game One, 83-78, then followed it up with a 65-62 win in Game Two.

It was a sweet revenge for the Blue Eagles as they lost to the Growling Tigers in the finals of the Season 69 six years ago. Overall, Ateneo has eight titles including the 1987, 1988, 2002, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 editions.

The Blue Eagles, however, will be having a hard time completing a rare six-peat following the graduation of some key players including the towering Greg Slaughter and back-to-back Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) Nico Salva.

Besides major shake up in its roster, Ateneo will also be adjusting on the system of new head coach Bo Perasol, who replaced current Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters mentor Norman Black.

Season 75 MVP
National University’s Bobby Ray Parks Jr. established his name as one of the most talented collegiate player in the country by winning his second season Most Valuable Player award.

He joined the league of back-to-back MVPs composed of Arwind Santos (2004-2005) of Far Eastern University, Rich Alvarez (2000-2001) and Jun Reyes (1987-1988) of Ateneo, Don Allado (1998-1999), Mark Telan (1996-1997) and Jun Limpot (1989-1990) of De La Salle University, Dennis Espino (1993-1994) of UST and Allan Caidic (1984-1985) of University of the East.
