PINOY ATHLETES GET NEW EQUIPMENT

A number of sporting equipment from China is expected to arrive within this month as the Filipino athletes gear up for the 2013 Southeast Asian Games scheduled in December in Myanmar.

According to Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richie Garcia, the equipment for table tennis, track and field, weightlifting and wushu were donated by the Chinese Ministry of Sports.

“It’s part of the bilateral agreement of the Philippines and China. We’re thankful that China is more than willing to help us in building a solid sports program for our athletes,” said Garcia.

The PSC chief also said that China, the 2008 Olympic Games overall champion, would provide training venues for Filipino weightlifters and wushu artists.

“They have world-class training facilities, trainers and coaches,” Garcia added.

The International Weightlifting Federation has earlier donated $10,000 worth of equipment to the Philippine Weightlifting Association while the Wrestling Association of the Philippines (WAP) got P500,000 worth of equipment from the Korean Wrestling Association.

Wrestling and weightlifting are included in 10 priority sports of the PSC. Other sports are athletics, boxing, tae kwon do, billiards, wushu, archery, bowling and swimming.

Besides the Myanmar SEA Games, the Filipino athletes are also slated to compete in the 2013 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in July in Incheon, South Korea .
