It’s going to be a busy year for the national track and field squad as the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) has lined up a number of international tournaments as part its build up for the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in December.
PATAFA President Go Teng Kok said they received invitations to compete in some major events this year including the three-leg 2013 Asian Grand Prix slated in June in India.
Olympian Marestella Torres bagged the lone gold medal of the country in the 2012 Thailand edition of the Asian Grand Prix when she topped the women’s long jump event in the third leg held in Chonburi. She also claimed one bronze in the first leg in Bangkok while fellow long jumper added a silver in the third leg. Sprinter Archand Christian Bagsit (men’s 400-meter) chipped in one bronze in the second leg held in Kanchanaburi.
Other possible tournaments for the Filipino tracksters are Chinese-Taipei Open Athletics Championships in Taipei, Taiwan, Singapore Open, Thailand Open Track and Field Championships, Malaysia Open, Hong Kong Inter-City Meet, Hanoi Open in Vietnam, Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, and the prestigious IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
Go, however, said that the team’s participation still depends on the available funding from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
