The Philippines has been chosen to host the 2013 edition of the ASBC (Asian Boxing Confederation) Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships slated on March 10 to 16.
The seven-day event sanctioned by the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) will be organized by the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) in Subic Bay Freeport in Pampanga.
There are 10 gold medals at stake in the tournament but the Philippines will just be competing in six weight categories—light flyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight.
Other events on tap are middleweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight.
The national youth team has already been a dominant force in international scene with Eumir Marcial winning gold medal in the 2011 Junior World Boxing Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan. Last year, Jade Bornea claimed bronze medal in the World Youth Championships in Yerevan, Armenia.
The ABAP is expecting more than 100 boxers from 25 countries.
The region’s best of the best boxers and personalities are also arriving as the ASBC decided to hold its Annual Awards Ceremony in Subic.
The ASBC will be awarding the Best Asian Elite Men Boxer of the Year to Serik Sapiyev of Kazakhstan, Best Asian Elite Women Boxer of the Year to Ren Cancan of China and the Best Asian Youth Boxer of the Year to Akmalbek Kosimov of Uzbekistan, among others.
