FEU, Adamson wallop foes in UAAP volleyball

FAR Eastern University (FEU) posted a 25-22, 27-29, 25-18, 25-23 victory over University of Santo Tomas (UST) at the end of the first round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 75 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan City.

Rosemarie Vargas nailed 17 hits including the game-clincher for the Lady Tamaraws.

By posting their second straight victory under returning coach Kid Santos, FEU improved to 3-4 mark in sixth place to move within a game of National University, Adamson and UST, all toting 4-3 records.

Wenneth Eulalio also scored 17 points while rookie Mary Remy Palma contributed 12 hits. Mayjorie Roxas and Marie Toni Basas added 10 for the Lady Tamaraws.

“They all played really well. We’re aiming to come up with huge wins like this in the coming games. I just told them to enjoy the game,” said Santos.

Skipper Judy Caballejo and Maika Ortiz combined for 23 points for the Tigresses.

Earlier, Adamson ended a two-game losing skid by blasting winless University of the East, 25-19, 25-17, 25-10.

Ma. Paulina Soriano had 15 hits, including four blocks, while Mayette Zapanta added 11 points, including two service aces, and eight digs for the Lady Falcons.

Adamson, seeking to make a return stint to the playoffs after a one-year absence, rebounded from its successive five-set losses from the hands of Ateneo and UST.

Christine Miralles and Leuseht Dawis finished with seven markers for the Lady Warriors, who suffered their seventh consecutive setback.

Meanwhile, reigning men’s titlist FEU (6-1) downed UST (4-3), 25-19, 25-15, 26-24 to finish second behind unbeaten NU, with Arvin Avila leading the way with 13 hits. Ateneo, behind Ricci Gonzales’ 13 points, improved to 2-5 by subduing UE (1-6), 25-20, 25-22, 25-20.
