DLSU sustains onslaught in UAAP tennis

Defending champion De La Salle University continued its onslaught and remained unscathed in the men’s tennis event of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 75.

La Salle scored a 3-2 victory over University of the Philippines (UP) to notch its third straight win.

The Green Archers took the first singles match as Alberto Villamor toppled Franklin Encarnacio, 6-1, 6-3, then Pemrik Alina and Kyle Cordero came up with a 7-6 (4), 2-6, 7-6 (8) win over Joshua Miranda in the first doubles for a commanding 2-0 lead.

But the Fighting Maroons came back strong when Angelo Esguerra and Gabby Gutierrez overpowered Ernesto Pantua, 6-1, 6-4, and JF Regis, 6-2, 7-6 (4), in their respective singles matches to tie the score at 2-2.

Ed Amor and Akio Sy, however, secured the victory for La Salle, beating the Fighting Maroons duo of Miggy Belda and Rex Brinas, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (6), in the deciding doubles match.

In other game, National University (NU) thumped University of the East (UE), 5-0, for its second win.

In the women’s division, University of Santo Tomas (UST) mauled Ateneo de Manila University, 5-0, to jumpstart its title-retention bid on a high note.

Meanwhile, the UST Tigresses dominated the UE Lady Warriors, 1-0, to improve their mark to 4-2.

UST and NU, which also has 4-2 card, are in a two-way tie for second behind defending two-time champion Adamson University (6-0).
