Purple camera haze on every generation of iPhone: Apple

Apple Inc.responded to a common complaint from iPhone fans on the iPhone 5’s camera lens with technological defects, by leaving message on its website over the weekend.

The problem: “a purplish or other colored flare, haze, or spot” when shooting into a light source just off-frame.

It exists on every generation of the iPhone and happens when a light sources hits the smartphone’s camera at a particular angle, according to Apple.

Apple explained that it is caused by a “reflection off the surfaces” in the camera module and onto its sensor.

To prove that the iPhone 5 is not the only smartphone with this problem, PC Magazine’s Jim Fisher did a test with the iPhone 5, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One S.

The results of Fisher’s test showed the iPhone 4S and Galaxy S III did the best at cutting down purple flare when shooting into a light source.

As the problem seemed to be prevalent with the iPhone 5, the clues point more strongly at a hardware fault than a problem with Apple’s new operating system.

The company’s explanation makes no mention of the software or a software fix. The solution to lens problem Apple offers is fairly simple: move your hand.

Moving the camera “slightly to change the position,” or “shielding the lens with your hand” should reduce the problem, Apple Inc. said.
