BEIRUT: After 29 years of military and political domination, Syria was to complete Tuesday its troop withdrawal from Lebanon, ushering in a new era for the tiny country.

The last Syrian soldiers were to leave after a farewell ceremony at a military airbase in the eastern town of Rayaq, in the presence of the two neighbors’ top army commanders.
