KUALA LUMPUR—Malaysia’s former deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, Friday appeared to rule out a return to the ruling party but remained cagey about his political plans after being freed from six years in jail.

In an interview with Agence France-Presse at his home on his first full day of freedom, Anwar said he had “never considered” rejoining the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), of which he was vice president before his downfall.
