MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica—Hurricane “Ivan” was upgraded to a rare, maximum strength category-five storm Saturday as it lashed Jamaica, claiming at least 14 lives as it churned relentlessly through the Caribbean toward the Cayman Islands, Cuba and the Florida Keys.

Ivan, now tied for the sixth worst storm to hit the Atlantic, was upgraded at 2100 GMT by the US National Hurricane Center as its sustained winds hit 165 miles (270 km/hr) an hour, recorded by a US Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft.
