Volare Bvlgari

Many of today’s Filipinos may have first heard of it in local Tex-Mexican restaurants.  But only quite a few people know that “Volare,” the familiar Italian tune, is actually the anthem of a legendary Woodstock musical festival of 1969.

This year, Filipinos will have a closer encounter with this music as Italian jewelry watchmaker Bvlgari, and the Philippine Italian Association (PIA), hold “Volare! None ltaliana 2004.”  This musical spectacle will unfold on November 17 at the Peninsula Manila Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

Sopranos, violinists and pianists flown in from Rome will serenade audiences while a renowned Italian chef lavishes them with genuine Italian cuisine. Patrons will also get a chance to win cruise tickets to world-class luxury ship Queen Mary 2.

Domenico Modugno put Italy on the pop map when he sang his self-penned song “Volare” at the first Woodstock festival, which also saw musical geniuses such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin perform live.

The catchy and infectious melody was soon adopted as one of the anthems of the festival. The song went on to win top prize at Italy’s annual San Remo Festival and sold 30 million copies worldwide.

Performing the music of Modugno and other popular Italian songs from the 1950s to the 1970s will be five Italian artists who will be flying in from Rome for the event. They are Alberto de Meis on violin, Roberto Salvalaio on accordion, Mario Bonicelli on vocals/piano and Paolo Zanetti on vocals and Yvonne Gomez as soprano.

The chef Michele Mingozzi of the Peninsula Manila will prepare the event’s multicourse Italian dinner menu. Fine Italian wines from Ralph’s Wines and Spirits and the best Italian coffee by Segafredo Café and Bar will be served.

The grand raffle prize of a cruise for two from New York to London on the Queen Mary 2 is offered through Cruise Professionals Inc., General Sales Agent of Cunard Line.

Tickets are at P5,000 and P3,000.
