INTERNATIONAL Master Mark Paragua showed his dreaded form to elevate the Philippines to a 2.5-1.5 upset of five-time champion and 15th seed Hungary and 19th place overall after the 14th and final round of the 36th World Chess Olympiad on Friday at the Gran Casino Hotel in Calvia, Mallorca, Spain.

Paragua (Elo rating 2534), the former junior prodigy, displayed a persistent attack to beat Grandmaster Robert Ruck (Elo 2562) in 42 moves of a Caro Kann defense in their Board 3 encounter to trigger the Filipinos’ third straight win and help bring their total to 32.0 points, allowing them to crash the top 20 of the biennial meet.
